Lourdes V. Abellera, Ph.D.
EXPERIENCE SUMMARY
Dr. Lourdes Abellera is currently working as a Civil and Environmental Engineer at MWH Americas, Inc. Previously, she worked for Brown and Caldwell. She obtained her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Civil (Environmental) Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where she worked with Professor Michael K. Stenstrom. Before moving to the United States, she held a faculty position in the Department of Geodetic Engineering of the University of the Philippines, Diliman. She earned her M.S. Remote Sensing and B.S. Geodetic Engineering degrees from the same institution.
Dr. Abellera specializes in water resources modeling, geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, digital image processing, spatial/non-spatial statistics, and knowledge-based systems. She has utilized these technologies in projects such as groundwater modeling, stormwater modeling, non-point source pollutant loading estimation, impervious surface detection, and solid waste disposal site selection. Her main software skills include ArcGIS, AutoCAD, InfoSWMM, H2OMAP Water, GMS (MODFLOW), ERDAS IMAGINE, and IDRISI. She is proficient with surveying and mapping instruments such as the GPS receiver, digitizer, and stereoscope. In addition, Dr. Abellera has experience in water quality analysis, evaluation and design of Best Management Practices (BMPs), and development of stormwater and watershed management plans. The Boeing Company, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) were some of her clients. Dr. Abellera has written funding proposals, technical reports, conference/journal articles, and book reviews. She has provided classroom instruction at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of the Philippines, Diliman. She is an Associate Editor of the journal The Environmentalist, and also reviews for other journals including the Journal of the American Water Resources Association and Environmental Monitoring and Assessment.
